Putnam County Aging Program, Inc. Hosts Dementia Awareness Event in Collaboration with WVSU Metro AAA and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office

Winfield, WV — [November 12, 2025] — The Putnam County Aging Program, Inc., in partnership with the WVSU Metro Area Agency on Aging and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, is proud to announce a Dementia Awareness Event to be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Winfield Baptist Church, located at 12902 Winfield Road, Winfield, WV 25213.

This community event aims to raise awareness, provide education, and connect caregivers and families with valuable local resources supporting those living with dementia.

Registration opens at 9:00 a.m., with vendor booths from a variety of community service providers available throughout the day. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore resources, gather information, and participate in meaningful discussions.

A panel of experts featuring representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association, WV Bureau of Senior Services, WV Aging and Disability Resource Centers, Legal Aid of WV, and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will present from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The panel will discuss dementia care, nutrition & brain health, financial exploitation, scam prevention, safety concerns, and community supports available to families.

Lunch will be served at 12:00 p.m., providing attendees with the opportunity to enjoy a meal and continue conversations with community partners and fellow caregivers.

Attendees are also invited to participate in the Dementia Experience, an interactive educational activity hosted by River Park Hospital, offered from 9:00–10:00 a.m. and again from 12:30–2:00 p.m. This immersive experience allows participants to better understand the challenges faced by those living with dementia.

To support caregivers, onsite respite care will be available free of charge for loved ones with dementia. Preregistration is strongly encouraged for those wishing to take advantage of this service. For more information or to register for respite, please contact Karen Johnson at 304-755-2385.

“We’re committed to providing education, support, and resources to families in our community affected by dementia,” said Jenni Sutherland, Executive Director at the Putnam County Aging Program. “This event offers an important opportunity to learn, connect, and grow together as a community.”

“Partnerships like this allow us to reach more families and connect them with services that can truly make a difference,” said Brenda Landers, Executive Director of the WVSU Metro Area Agency on Aging. “Our goal is to empower caregivers and enhance quality of life for older adults through information, support, and collaboration.”

“Our deputies often encounter individuals with dementia in the community, and events like this help build understanding and compassion,” said Sheriff Bobby Eggleton of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. “We’re proud to support initiatives that strengthen our ability to keep residents with dementia safe while providing peace of mind to their families.”

Join us in raising awareness and building a more compassionate, informed community for those living with dementia and their caregivers.
